The Washington School of Chinese Language and Culture (WSCLC) held its 2026 Graduation and year-End Ceremony on June 7 at Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland. Faculty, students, parents, and community members gathered to review the year's learning achievements and to bid farewell to seven high school graduates as they embark on a new stage of life. The graduates are Nicholas Chung, Anderson Hong, Brendan Lau, Keira Lee, Diane Liu, Sydney Moore, and Shannon Shen. Among them, two students (Nicholas Chung and Keira Lee) studied consecutively at the school for 15 years—a dedication that is particularly worthy of encouragement. Coinciding with the school's 40th anniversary, this year's ceremony carried even greater significance.
The ceremony was hosted by Charlie Pan and commenced with the singing of the U.S. National Anthem. Board Chairperson Jennifer Lee and Principal Helen Liu delivered opening remarks, welcoming parents and guests while congratulating all students on successfully completing their year of Chinese language studies. They noted that language learning is a long and challenging journey, making the students' continuous dedication to improving their Chinese proficiency truly commendable. They extended congratulations and encouragement to the graduates, hoping everyone retains their passion for Chinese and utilizes their talents in their new journeys.
Jack Huang, Director of the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Washington, D.C., attended by invitation and delivered a speech. He praised the school's long-standing dedication to overseas Chinese education, noting that it provides a high-quality environment for learning Chinese and successfully passes down cultural values. He encouraged graduates to apply what they learned, continue enhancing their language skills, and serve as vital bridges for cultural exchange.
Bianca Chang, a member of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, presented a certificate of recognition on behalf of the State Department of Education and the Board of Education. The award recognized the school's outstanding contributions to promoting Chinese education and serving the community. Marking its 40th anniversary, the school's deep roots in language teaching and cultural preservation have nurtured countless excellent students, establishing it as a key institution for Chinese education in the greater Washington area.
During the ceremony, the seven senior graduates shared reflections on their years of study in Chinese, expressing gratitude for the support of teachers and parents while demonstrating excellent Chinese communication skills. A video produced by the graduates was then shown, capturing precious moments from early childhood to high school graduation, alongside memories of learning and activities at the school. The heartwarming scenes deeply moved the faculty, students, and parents present. Afterward, the principal and board chairperson presented graduation certificates and scholarships.
Additionally, 27 kindergarten students completed their first stage of Chinese learning under the witness of teachers and parents. Alongside the graduation, the school held its annual closing ceremony to honor students for exceptional performance in language learning and various activities. Faculty and students reviewed the achievements of the academic year, showcasing growth in language ability and cultural perspective. Finally, Academic Director Yun-Ying Tsai and Deputy Director Danny Liu presented the Principal’s Award and various student accolades. Exceptional and veteran teachers were also honored, highlighted by Director Yun-Ying Tsai receiving a 40-year long-service teaching award. This remarkable milestone symbolizes Teacher Tsai’s dedication and passion for education. The ceremony concluded successfully amid blessings and applause, marking a perfect end to the school year.
Since its founding in 1986, the WSCLC has entered its 40th year. The school has consistently upheld its mission to "inherit the Chinese language and culture," striving to create a meaningful learning environment for the next generation within a multicultural American society. In addition to kindergarten classes, it offers adult conversation classes to encourage parents and children to learn Chinese together, fostering family language integration and cultural identity. The WSCLC holds classes every Sunday from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland. Children aged three and older are welcome to register for a trial class, and international friends are invited to audit the adult conversation classes.
